Because my dad is stationary in front of the television, I have been watching a documentary on the 2009 Superbowl narrated by Jeff Goldblum.

Did you know they mic the players and coaches and can hear what they say in game film? It’s amazing. For example, the Steelers coach tells one of his assistant coaches that he likes his sweatshirt… IN THE MIDDLE OF THE SUPERBOWL. Or when the Cardinals started to come back, a Steelers running back said to a teammate, “Do you dare to be great? This is our time to be great!”

I love football, but I have a feeling that a LOT more females would enjoy sports if they could hear this commentary. I think I’ll call ESPN and share my idea asap.

This is pretty much been my spot since my dad got home from the hospital. It’s amazing how you can be fully functional at your job from a couch 2,000 miles away from your job, while also taking care of family members. If you need me, this is where I’ll be until Christmas.

There is nothing more common about testicular cancer than the fact that Lance Armstrong had it. If I had a nickel for every time I’ve heard his name in the past 48 hours, I’d be a millionaire.

When I was little, I used to read Lurlene McDaniel books and cry and cry for days. When I told my mom that I thought God was preparing me to lose someone to a tragic illness, she stopped letting me buy them.

I watched my best friend lose his father in college, and I told my parents that I need to go before them, because I know I am not strong enough to live through a loss like that.

In the past 24 hours, I have had conversations with my father and my little brother that included the word “cancer.” And while they were both somewhat preliminary, the only word I can use to describe myself is lost. I don’t know how to be strong for the two of them, when I can’t even be strong for myself. And then, it came over me. As I pulled myself together and rallied into action, making decisions, booking plane tickets and taking control, I realized that nothing is stronger than my family.

Not cancer. Not surgery. Not doctors. Not the distance between New York and Arkansas.

And in less than 24 hours, I’ll be able to hug my dad and sit by his side while he prepares for a surgery we never saw coming. And if something is serious with my brother, I can do the same thing. Because my family is my heart. And NOTHING is stronger than my family.

How amazing it would be if we could get everyone we know to send one. It is FREE and it only takes a second. No matter what your stance on our foreign policy, imagine how great our armed service men and women, far from their families and homes will feel to know that we are thinking of them and wishing them well especially at this time of year. It is such a simple way to say thank you. Please take a few minutes to pick one out to send and then pass this on to other people you know. Spread the word!

I sometimes, okay all the times, have a hard time executing kind things I want to do. I have really good intentions, but then I get so busy and forget. This is easy. I just did it. Maybe it’s because I just finished reading Dear John, and am feeling all military sentimental, or maybe because I’m just a good person. Either way. This is a good thing.
