Presents are the best way to show someone how much you care. It is like this tangible thing that you can point to and say ‘Hey man, I love you this many dollars worth.’

2x10, “Christmas Party”

Every year on Christmas Eve, my brothers and I open one present each. Every year my mother argues that we have never done that and can not open anything. Every year we win. I just got a Chipotle Gift Card from my brother and sister in law. Christmas win!!!

OMG! This is definitely my new favorite thing to do.

downsizing:

Weight loss aside, what’s been the highlight of your 2009? Where do you see yourself in 10 years? Back in the south? NY? CT with two kids, a husband, and a dog?

The weight loss was a pretty big highlight, but I think the real answer is that I feel like I’ve finally settled into myself this year. On top of losing almost 50 lbs, I’ve discovered confidence and strengths in me that I didn’t know were there. I’ve never really “liked” who I was until this year. I keep joking that I’m “hitting my peak” as an adult, and I 100% believe that.

I can’t imagine life not in New York, and plan to be here for at least another 3-5 years, but I assume that in 10 years I’ll be in Dallas with a family. And a Saint Bernard dog. ;)

fern mallis is such a powerful lady and she’s often portrayed as kind of a…witch. how is she IRL?

She’s “busy” and determined, but very kind. My first Fashion Week a few years ago I had no clue who she was, but happened to read an article about how she single handedly made IMG and Fashion Week into the empires they are. So then, when I happened to be seated beside her at the Zac Posen show, I started gushing about how inspiring she was and yada yada. She was extremely gracious and told me that if “it’s your passion, you can make anything happen.” That has stuck with me ever since.

You seem to work a lot — do you like what you do? If you weren’t in the field you’re in, what would you be doing?

I do work a lot, and it does help that I love it. I am in PR, with a focus on consumer events and sponsorships. Working in NYC is at once exhausting, challenging and exhilirating. There are times when I want to move back south and get a 9 to 5 desk job, and then the very next day I’ll end up on a cruise ship or talking to Fern Mallis at the Fashion Week tents. That’s why I moved to New York, so I try to be grateful for my job even when I’m worn out and beat down.

If I wasn’t in PR, I would be a life coach. I can barely hold my messy life together, but I give AMAZING advice and enjoy helping others solve their problems!

This is what happens when you rely on your 16 year old brother to pick you up from Sunday lunch. You end up walking down massive hills without a coat in your high heeled boots to get to Michael’s for some shopping while you wait. FAIL.

Top Five Things Said to Me at Hometown Holiday Parties

graceinsmallthings:

chatter:

5. You look so thin

4. So what do you actually do again?

3. Where’s your brother?

2. Are you dating anyone?

1. When are you going to be done with that crazy New York thing and move home?

And people wonder why I haven’t been home for the holiday season in 6 years.

Substitute sister for brother, and this is—spot on—my return to Tullahoma every year and has been since college. I got so fed up with question #2, I went out and found the first guy who would marry me (albeit after a five-year courtship). Of course, now we get the “when are you planning on having kids?” question to which I laugh and say “ha! You mean dogs?” (Hey, if they’re rude enough to just assume we’re going to have kids, I don’t feel the slightest bit bad about dishing it back to them. No need to assume we all want the same things out of life.)

Haha, I actually started to ask a married friend of mine tonight when they plan on having babies but stopped because I knew it would be added to this list if I was married/engaged. Oh the joys of being from the south.
